Batangas, Philippines – Taal Volcano in Batangas province experienced a minor phreatomagmatic eruption early morning today, December 3, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
At 5:58 a.m., a 2,800-meter grayish plume was emitted.
PHIVOLCS also detected two volcanic tremors lasting four minutes, along with a 600-meter plume that drifted southwest.
The agency has issued warnings of potential hazards such as steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, ashfall, and toxic gas emissions.
A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when magma comes into contact with water, resulting in explosive events that release steam, ash, and fragmented volcanic material, PHIVOLCS said.
