Typhoon Carina and Monsoon Rains Claim 34 Lives in Luzon

MANILA – The number of fatalities from the monsoon rains, which were intensified by typhoon Carina, has risen to 34, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday.

PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo reported that this figure is based on preliminary data from police field units as of 10 a.m.

Fajardo noted that the death toll is still pending validation by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, which will release the official count of casualties.

Monsoon rains, worsened by the typhoon, caused flooding in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon throughout the week.

In response, Metro Manila has declared a state of calamity to access additional disaster response funds.

Furthermore, some areas have delayed the opening of classes, which were initially scheduled for Monday, July 29.
