Britain has formally recognized the State of Palestine, a move Prime Minister Keir Starmer says is meant to revive hopes of peace, free from violence between Israel and Palestine.
Even ceasefire talks were still blurry between Hamas and Israel, on Sunday, Starmer said their decision reflects Britain’s commitment to a two-state solution, ensuring both a safe and secure Israel and a viable Palestinian state.
While the UK Prime Minister continues to condemn Hamas, he also pointed to what he described as a humanitarian crisis in Gaza caused by Israel’s ongoing military campaign.
In line with this, Starmer demanded the release of 250 hostages still held by Hamas and confirmed sanctions against the group.
At the same time, he urged Israel to ease border restrictions and allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israel has expressed outrage over the move.
As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said recognising a Palestinian state amounts to rewarding terrorism.
On the other hand, Palestinian leaders welcomed Britain’s decision, calling it an important step toward a negotiated peace.
Aside from Britain, Canada; Australia; and Portugal also joined in recognising a Palestinian state.
