Nearly 20 million residents from Metro Manila, Bulacan, and parts of Cavite and Rizal are assured of a continuous water supply following the inauguration of Tunnel 5 of the Angat Water Transmission Improvement Project (AWTIP) at the Bigte Basin in Barangay Bigte, Norzagaray, Bulacan, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The 4.3-meter-diameter, 6.43-kilometer tunnel can carry over 1.6 billion liters of water per day, increasing the previous transport capacity from 6 billion liters to 8 billion liters daily.
According to the President, Tunnel 5 will now serve as additional support to the Umiray–Angat–Ipo–La Mesa system, helping strengthen water security for Metro Manila and Mega Manila.
In addition, the President said that Tunnel 5 will also be helpful during the dry season, ensuring that the water supply will not be disrupted.
Meanwhile, the project was completed through the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) in partnership with the Common Purpose Facility (CPF), Maynilad, and Manila Water.
It can be recalled that the construction of Tunnel 5 began in 2022 and was completed in 2025.
