Manila, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) has reportedly recorded 17 cases of a sub-class of Super Flu in the Philippines in 2025, occurring between July and August.
All of these cases were from Metro Manila, and all patients have since recovered.
According to Health Secretary Ted Herbosa, the flu is considered a seasonal infectious disease, and in the Philippines, cases typically increase during the cold and rainy seasons.
The public is not advised to be overly concerned, as the flu is generally a self-limiting illness, meaning it usually resolves on its own with adequate rest.
However, those with cancer or other medical conditions, including senior citizens, are encouraged to get the flu vaccine.
The Department of Health also recommends public health precautionary measures for anyone experiencing flu symptoms to prevent further transmission.
Meanwhile, the DOH clarified that there are currently 80 flu variants, but only those variants considered epidemic are monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO) during a specific period.
The vaccine provided in North America, where Super Flu cases are currently high, is different from the one used in the Philippines.
At present, residents of North America and the United Kingdom are experiencing high numbers of Super Flu cases.
Filipinos planning to visit these countries are advised to exercise extra caution against the illness.
DOH recommends getting the Northern Hemisphere flu vaccine beforehand.
