Manila, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has warned that China is intensifying its cyber-attacks against the Philippines amid rising geopolitical tensions.
AFP Cyber Command Chief Brig. Gen. Joey Fontiveros said on Thursday, that the Philippines continues to face persistent cyber-attacks related to the ongoing territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Fontiveros pointed such China-based malicious actors are sending malware, DDOS attacks, data leaks and compromising websites.
The official said it is possible that the threat of cyber-attacks will expand to a global risk profile and bring misinformation, disinformation and cyber insecurity.
Public administrations are at high risk of cyber-attacks, with 20% of them being the dark web, followed by the education service with 18.8% and the finance and insurance sector with 10.1%.
There are also tactics of ransomware, phishing and accessing sales.
The Philippines has reportedly detected attempts by foreign nationals to access intelligence data, but no major breach has occurred yet.
The Department of National Defense (DND) is set to participate in UK maritime cybersecurity training, as part of the Philippines’ efforts to strengthen its cyber defense.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has acknowledged the DND’s initiative in strengthening the Philippines’ defense capability.—Alvin Pelobello, Eurotv News
