Manila, Philippines — Congressman Jesus ‘Bong’ Suntay has called on Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) to stop the alleged continued imposition of additional charges on consumers, following a surge in complaints over unclear and questionable fees in electricity bills.
Suntay said the public has long been burdened by system losses and inefficiencies in power distribution.
He added that certain government subsidy mechanisms such as discounts for senior citizens and lifeline rates for beneficiaries of the 4Ps program and other low-income earners also appear to be passed on to paying consumers.
The lawmaker emphasized the need for a thorough review of various charges, including system loss charges, universal charges, renewable energy fees, and other pass-through costs. He noted that subsidy schemes should clearly define who ultimately bears these expenses.
Suntay also underscored the importance of stricter regulatory oversight to ensure that all electricity charges remain transparent, reasonable, and fair to the public.
