DEATH TOLL FROM 7.8 MAGNITUDE MINDANAO EARTHQUAKE REACHES 78

Ten days after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao on the opening day of classes, authorities continue to record additional casualties and widespread damage across affected communities.

According to the latest situation report released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday, June 18, the number of fatalities linked to the June 8 earthquake in Maasim, Sarangani has increased to 78.

The agency also reported 1,339 injured individuals, while 30 others remain missing.

The earthquake affected a total of 346,413 families, or more than 1.4 million individuals.

This is across 573 barangays in Regions IX, XI, XII, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Meanwhile, 81,855 of residents remain displaced.

Of the total displaced population, 18,504 individuals are currently staying in 45 evacuation centers, while more than 63,000 others are temporarily sheltering outside evacuation facilities.

On the other hand, 7,461 aftershocks have been recorded so far. 84 of these were felt.

As of June 18, over 10 cities and municipalities remain under a state of calamity as authorities continue relief, rehabilitation, and recovery efforts.
