Manila, Philippines — Australia announced additional support to strengthen the Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) aerial and maritime drone capabilities through new equipment assistance and training programs set to run from 2026 to 2030.
The commitment was announced by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong during her visit aboard BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) at Pier 15, Port Area, Manila on July 21.
Foreign Minister Wong was welcomed by Department of Transportation (DOTr) Senior Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor and PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, who underscored Australia’s continued assistance in enhancing the Coast Guard’s operational capabilities.
According to the PCG, the new package builds on Australia’s previous support for the agency’s Maritime Domain Awareness initiatives and reflects the growing strategic partnership between the Philippines and Australia in promoting maritime safety and regional stability.
As part of the visit, Australian-supported drone assets were placed on static display, showcasing the practical results of the two countries’ defense and maritime cooperation in improving the PCG’s operational readiness.
Following the onboard program, Foreign Minister Wong and Admiral Gavan held a private meeting to discuss maritime security issues and explore opportunities to further expand bilateral maritime cooperation.
PCG Spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the engagement further strengthened the partnership between the Philippines and Australia, which is anchored on mutual trust and a shared commitment to maintaining a peaceful and rules-based maritime region.
