Manila, Philippines — A 30-year-old man, identified as alias “Jenevie,” is now in police custody after causing panic and disturbance when he punched a security guard inside the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help along Redemptorist Road in Barangay Baclaran on Sunday afternoon.
An unlicensed firearm was also recovered from him.
In a statement, the Baclaran Church clarified to the public that no shooting occurred inside the National Shrine.
Although two individuals sustained minor injuries during the incident, they were immediately given first aid.
The church also appealed to the public not to spread unverified information to prevent unnecessary fear and alarm.
According to a report from the PNP Southern Police District, the man is a resident of Imus, Cavite, and was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
The security guard allegedly approached the man after noticing his suspicious behavior.
When the guard attempted to escort him outside, the man punched him, which triggered the disturbance.
Authorities confiscated a .38-caliber revolver containing one bullet from the suspect.
The case against the suspect is now being processed.
He is expected to face multiple charges, including Alarm and Scandal, Disobedience to an Agent of a Person in Authority, and other related offenses.
The SPD also reminded the public that it is strictly intensifying security and monitoring in public places to ensure the safety of devotees.
