Super Typhoon Rosal (international name: CHAMPI) has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility, prompting the state weather bureau to raise Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over parts of Luzon.
As of 10 AM Tuesday, the typhoon was located 1,385 kilometers east of Central Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 230 kilometers per hour.
Rosal is moving west-northwest at 25 kilometers per hour and is expected to maintain its super typhoon strength over the Philippine Sea.
Signal No. 1 is in effect over Batanes, parts of the Babuyan Islands, northeastern Cagayan, northeastern Isabela, and northeastern Catanduanes.
These areas may experience winds of 39 to 61 kilometers per hour within the next 36 hours.
The weather bureau warned that Signal No. 2 or 3 may be raised as Rosal approaches.
Rosal is forecast to move generally west-northwestward before turning northwestward and then northward later this week.
It may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday evening or early Saturday.
The typhoon is expected to weaken into a typhoon by Thursday, with further weakening possible over the weekend.
