Manila, Philippines — The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is calling for a nationwide investigation of pet crematorium operations following the discovery of 29 deceased dogs and cats dumped in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.
The pets were reportedly brought to Ahjay Paws Aftercare Pet Crematorium in Bacoor City, Cavite, but their remains were later found inside sacks in a vacant lot in Barangay Minuyan Proper, San Jose del Monte.
In a statement, PAWS urged government agencies to investigate not only the crematorium involved but also other similar establishments.
The group called on the Department of the Interior and Local Government to direct local government units to inspect pet crematoria and verify their business permits and clearances.
It also urged the Department of Health to look into possible sanitation violations, while the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, through the Environmental Management Bureau, was asked to investigate possible environmental violations.
PAWS also called on the Bureau of Animal Industry to clarify the regulations governing pet crematorium operations.
Meanwhile, it urged the Department of Trade and Industry to ensure that the affected pet owners have access to consumer remedies.
The Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation were also asked to assist the pet owners in documenting their complaints and investigating possible criminal offense.
PAWS clarified that the alleged dumping of already deceased animals does not, by itself, constitute a violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
However, it said the alleged misrepresentation of services and improper disposal of animal remains, along with any other violations supported by evidence, must be investigated.
An animal rescue group said all 29 animals have since been claimed by their respective owners.
