MANILA — Sen. Nancy Binay officially filed her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for Makati mayor on Monday, potentially setting up a political face-off against her brother-in-law, Rep. Luis Campos of Makati’s 2nd District, who is the husband of current Mayor Abigail Binay.
Sen. Binay arrived at the Barangay Valenzuela Community Hall just before 10 a.m., with her COC endorsed by former Vice President Jejomar Binay, founder of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).
During her filing, she expressed her desire to improve the city’s delivery of basic services and explore ways to use technology to make these services “more efficient and transparent.”
Her voice trembled with emotion as she addressed the family dynamics involved in the upcoming elections, acknowledging that the Binay family has held leadership in Makati since 1988, except for a brief period from 2015 to 2016. Despite this, Sen. Binay emphasized that familial bonds remain strong.
“At the end of the day moot and academic na yung apela ng aking kapatid… I have filed for mayor but at the end of the day, ate niya pa din ako, magkapatid pa rin kaming dalawa,” she said, referring to her relationship with Mayor Abigail Binay.
She clarified that she is not running against her sister, saying, “Sa akin, hindi ko kalaban ang kapatid ko… hindi kami magkaaway.”
In a separate interview, former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, the youngest of the Binay siblings, revealed that Sen. Binay had attempted to reach out to Mayor Abby to avoid a political rift, but no conversation took place.
“Si Luis is my brother-in-law. Hindi naman siya Binay. Hindi din naman siya mananalo ng posisyon niya kung hindi din dahil nakapangasawa siya ng isang Binay,” Junjun said, referring to Campos.
Despite the local political tensions, the Binay family is united in supporting Mayor Abby’s senatorial bid in the 2025 elections, according to Junjun.
Sen. Binay reiterated her support for her sister’s Senate run, while hoping her constituents will decide whether they want to continue the “Serbisyong Binay” legacy.
Running alongside Sen. Binay is former Olympian and Makati congressman Monsour Del Rosario, who previously ran for vice mayor in 2019 but lost.
Sen. Binay remains hopeful that her sister will convince Campos not to run for mayor, saying, “There is always hope. Kailangan lagi tayo umaasa na at the end of the day magkakaayos kaming magkakapatid.”
Mayor Abigail Binay has not yet confirmed when her husband will file his COC for Makati’s top post.
