PAWS: PETS SHOULD NOT BE CHRISTMAS GIFTS

Manila, Philippines — Think before you gift!

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is urging the public to reconsider gifting pets this holiday season, reminding everyone that animals require lifelong commitment.

“Let’s spread kindness this Christmas not only to people, but also to animals who depend on our care and commitment for their entire lives,” the group said in a Facebook post (December 1, 2024).

PAWS explained that giving pets as gifts “is rarely a good idea,” even if the recipient is an animal lover or the intention is to teach responsibility and compassion.

“Unlike material gifts, animals are living beings with mental, emotional, and physical needs. Owning a pet is a serious, lifelong commitment that requires the pet owner’s careful thought, research, preparation, and readiness – emotionally, mentally, and financially,” PAWS emphasized.

The group also pointed out that many pets given as gifts often end up neglected or abandoned after the initial excitement fades.

Thus, they encouraged those who receive such gifts but are not ready for the responsibility to politely decline.

Likewise, PAWS further reminded pet owners to spay or neuter their pets before considering rehoming them, to prevent unwanted litter and reduce the number of homeless animals.

They also recommended adopting or fostering pets from shelters instead of purchasing them in shops.
