DSWD ASSISTS STUDENT EVACUEES AMID MT. KANLAON CRISIS

Manila, Philippines – While Mt. Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 3 and most residents affected by the volcano’s eruption are still displaced, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) continues to support affected students.  

Aside from providing food and non-food items to the volcano victims, the agency is also trying to assist students with their studies after the implementation of blended learning for students.  

Based on DSWD data, over 1,600 elementary and high school students are currently staying in 23 evacuation centers.

As of January 26, the DSWD’s Disaster Response and Management recorded 12,286 families or 47,255 individuals affected by the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

Of the total number recorded by the agency, 3,083 families or 9,757 individuals are temporarily staying in evacuation centers.

The DSWD has also distributed over 87.4 million pesos worth of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the Kanlaon eruption.

Based on the latest report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at 4:55 AM this Monday, Mt. Kanlaon is still under Alert Level 3.

Eight ash eruptions, lasting from six to forty-six minutes, and 30 earthquakes were also recorded.

On January 26, Kanlaon emitted 2,964 tons of sulfur.

Due to the current condition of the volcano, approaching the volcano is strictly prohibited, and residents are strongly advised to evacuate.
