Strong 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Lingig, Surigao del Sur, Felt Across Regions

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast northeast of Lingig, Surigao del Sur at 6:22 AM on August 3, 2024, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The quake, initially reported as 6.5, was later updated to 6.8, with a depth of 9 kilometers. The epicenter was located approximately 66 kilometers northeast of Lingig.

PHIVOLCS has indicated that while no significant damage is expected, aftershocks may occur. Importantly, they confirmed that there is no tsunami threat associated with this earthquake, stating, “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data”.
