OPAPRU CALLS FOR UNITED, PEACEFUL PARTICIPATION IN 1ST BARMM PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

Manila, Philippines — Starting July 16, the election period and gun ban implementation will begin, as part of the preparations for the 1st Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliamentary Elections set on September 14, 2026.

In line with the upcoming elections, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento is calling for a peaceful election.

Sarmiento recognized the role of political parties in representing the commmunities, and in securing peace and democracy in the region.

With this, he is urging contending parties to uphold rule of law and stability through addressing related issues through available legal processes.

He likewise encouraged Bangsamoro leaders to prioritize measures that will push for progressive and economically stable region.

Further, Sarmiento urged residents to actively participate in the elections, and vote wisely for officials that will be responsible for the welfare and security of the region.

OPAPRU also called for everyone’s cooperation to the COMELEC and national government’s support during this period.

Sarmiento believed that the Bangsamoro Elections is a significant step in achieving the peace process for the region, which will also complete the political track under the Bangsamoro Organic Law of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

Meanwhile, AB Third Party Monitoring Team expressed belief that the pursuit of the parliamentary elections is a big progress in achieving the agreed peace process in the region.

TPMT Chair Heino Marius noted the importance of the elections not having to be delayed anymore, in order to secure political independence in Bangsamoro.
