FL, PRES. MARCOS TO EMBARK VISIT ON JAPAN; ADDRESS INDO-PACIFIC SECURITY

Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will embark on a historic four-day State Visit to Japan from May 26 to 29, 2026, marking the first such visit by a Philippine leader to Tokyo in over a decade.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the trip coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and will feature an imperial audience with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.

Beyond the these, President Marcos will hold an important bilateral summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to address Indo-Pacific security challenges and elevate ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The leaders plan to launch negotiations for a vital military intelligence-sharing pact while reviewing the implementation of existing defense cooperation and troop access agreements.

To conclude the diplomatic push, the President will secure new trade, investment, and human resource agreements during high-level meetings with Japanese business executives.

Marcos is also scheduled to meet with representatives of the 340,000-strong Filipino community living in Japan to reinforce the deep economic and cultural bonds between the two democracies.
