Manila, Philippines – Vice President Sara Duterte did not appear on the first day of the Impeachment trial in the senate.
According to one of the lawyers of Duterte, Atty. Michael Poa, the vice president opted to appear before the senate impeachment court, as the trial begins at 2 PM today.
In a statement issued by Duterte, she said that it does not diminish the accountability or imply lack of transparency due to her non-appearance.
She added that it is up for the prosecution to prove the case on the trial court.
Duterte believes in the importance of the proceedings that must be guided by the constitution and due process.
Duterte said the opinion of the Chief executive had no importance on the proceedings, highlighting that public officials must keep their personal opinion and should rely on the law established by policies, evidence, and facts.
On the other hand, VP’s brother, Davao City representative Paolo Duterte said in a statement to let the evidence speak, and hopes that the proceedings will prosper in fair, professional and without necessary distractions.
