Manila Philippines – The Department of National Defense, Tuesday has expressed concern over China’s ballistic missile launch, joining the international community in condemnation.
Although the missile test was conducted outside the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone and territorial waters, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. asserted the need to join the growing international protest.
This stance stems from the threat such action poses to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to the DND statement, Beijing’s launch of a missile into the South Pacific demonstrates irresponsible use of military power, showing disregard for smaller nations and the ecosystems upon which their people rely.
It is also viewed as a provocation against those who oppose China’s illegal expansionism and coercive actions.
The Philippines joins its Pacific allies in calling on China to act responsibly and to cease its intimidation tactics and imperial ambitions.
The US State Department confirmed China’s launch of an unarmed intercontinental-range ballistic missile, which landed in the South Pacific Ocean.
This coincided with a call for China to engage in dialogues regarding arms control.
The US also expressed readiness to stand up and defend its allies against any threats.
The Chinese Embassy in Manila has not yet issued a statement on the matter; however, Beijing claims it notified other nations of the activity, asserting that it was consistent with international practice.
