Manila, Philippines – Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. emphasized that lasting internal peace and stability are essential to building a stronger and more sustainable national defense posture.
Speaking during an interview Wednesday (July 29, 2026), Teodoro said the country’s external defense efforts cannot be sustained without first ensuring peace and stability within its borders.
“Walang external defense na sustainable kung wala kang internal peace and stability. Pre-condition ‘yun,” Teodoro said.
The Defense chief explained that national security is anchored on both internal security and external defense, particularly as the country continues to confront evolving security threats, including foreign malign influence. He also stressed the importance of maintaining the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) presence across the country to ensure operational sustainability, strengthen deterrence, and protect national interests.
“Whatever service it is, presence must be maintained. First of all, so that the sustainability of the operation will not be neglected,” he added.
Teodoro likewise underscored the need for the AFP to have secure, safe, and sustainable areas where it can effectively conduct operations, including activities with international defense partners.
He also reaffirmed the importance of continuing the AFP modernization program, saying strategic assets and resources must be developed with long-term national security requirements in mind.
On the issue of military lands and strategic properties, the Defense Secretary said these remain vital to the AFP’s mission of safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He emphasized that strategic military areas should be preserved for defense purposes to ensure the Armed Forces remain capable of responding to future security challenges. — Aliyah Esquillo, Contributor
