MANILA, Philippines — Makabayan bloc, led by ACT Teachers Partylist Representative Antonio Tinio and KABATAAN Partylist Representative Renee Co, along with workers from San Miguel Integrated Logistics Services Inc. (SMILSI), filed House Resolution No. 1228 to urge the House of Representatives to investigate the widespread termination of SMILSI regular employees, today, July 28.
According to the content of the resolution, its aim is for the House of Representatives to examine and investigate the alleged unfair labor practices, union busting, violations of workers’ security of tenure, and the impending mass layoff of 800 regular workers placed on floating status by SMILSI.
According to ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. Tinio, the 800 regular workers were abruptly terminated to be replaced by agency-hired and contractual workers.
“Mahigit walong daan sa kanila ang sinibak sa trabaho nang biglaan upang palitan ng mga agency hired o mga kontraktuwal na manggagawa”, Tinio said in a video posted on ACT Teachers Partylist Facebook page.
Meanwhile, SMILSI workers, together with the members of Pagkakaisa ng Manggagawa sa Timog Katagalugan-Kilusang Mayo Uno (PAMANTIK-KMU), also went to the office of the House Committee on Labor and Employment to call for their grievances and demands regarding the issue. — Shey Valino, Contributor
