DSWD URGES CONTENT CREATORS RESPECT FOR PWDs AMID BACKLASH ON VIRAL PODCAST

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has called on content creators to respect persons with disabilities (PWDs) and avoid making them subject of ridicule or discriminatory content.

DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao issued the reminder following a controversial episode of the Machong Chismisan podcast that mocked Josh Aquino, son of Queen of All Media Kris Aquino.

“Every individual with a disability, including those on the autism spectrum or with neurodevelopmental conditions, deserves dignity, respect, privacy, and the utmost care,” she said.

She also warned that exploiting a person’s disability for entertainment or online engagement can reinforce harmful stereotypes and lead to discrimination.

“We urge all content creators to exercise responsibility in discussing topics that make fun and violate the rights of vulnerable sectors such as persons with disabilities, whether it is apparent or non-apparent. We need to protect their dignity not only as an act of compassion but also as part of upholding their human rights,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.

The DSWD also reminded content creators that under Republic Act No. 7277, or the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, as amended by Republic Act No. 9442, acts that shame, ridicule, or vilify PWDs may be punishable by law.

The controversial podcast episode has since been taken down after severe backlash online, and its hosts have issued a public apology.

Meanwhile, the Pod Network has already terminated the contract of the Machong Chismisan.
