Manila, Philippines – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) was alarmed following the announcement of social media site X, formerly Twitter that it will now allow X-rated content on their platform.
The DICT made the statement following the announcement by the owner of the social media app, Elon Musk, that it now allows adult content.
According to DICT Undersecretary Jeffrey Ian Dy, this is just proof that it is necessary to really regulate social media in the country, similar to what they urge other social platforms to do.
For now, he said, the agency can do is monitor this development and uphold X’s promise that it will blur sensitive content.
“This is alarming for us because this is also a cultural sensitivity issue. We really need to regulate social media. because it’s not porke’t—they being a Western brand—think that this is okay, which means it’s okay for us,” according to DY.
Adult content and nudity on X were not like on Facebook and Instagram, which have strict rules.
Dy said they will monitor such a move by X and uphold its promise to blur images for the public and that adult content can only be accessed by those in the right ages
The platform says it balances this by restricting exposure to children or users who have opted out of viewing such content.
Dy admitted that currently, the DICT can’t do anything unless the photos or videos are minors.
