Typhoon Carina Hits Southern China, New LPA Threatens Mindanao

Typhoon Carina weakened upon making landfall in southern China on Thursday afternoon, as reported by the state weather bureau, PAGASA.

PAGASA also noted a low-pressure area (LPA) observed east of Mindanao at 2:00 p.m. By 3:00 p.m., this LPA was located 985 kilometers east of Mindanao.

According to PAGASA, Typhoon Carina is now less likely to cause heavy rainfall in any part of the Philippines. As of 4:00 p.m., it was last located approximately 550 kilometers north-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, moving west-southwestward at 10 kph. It has maximum sustained winds of 129 kph near the center and gusts up to 180 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal 1 is still in effect for Batanes.

The southwest monsoon, enhanced by Carina, will bring heavy to intense rainfall to the Ilocos Region, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Zambales, and Bataan on Thursday night, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in various areas of western Luzon from tonight through Saturday, according to PAGASA.

Outside the Philippine area of responsibility, Carina will continue to move west-northwestward over southeastern China and is expected to weaken further as it interacts with the landmass.
