Manila, Philippines – Malacañang Palace announced that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to issue a statement regarding the United States’ extradition request for religious leader Apollo Quiboloy.
This concerns the sex trafficking and racketeering charges filed against Quiboloy in the United States.
According to Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro, she and President Marcos have already discussed the extradition matter, and the President stated that the US request requires careful study.
The President is expected to issue a statement within two weeks.
Malacañang had previously confirmed that the US request requires immediate evaluation and resolution in the interest of justice.
The President is reportedly considering two options, both of which are covered by provisions in the treaty between the Philippines and the US.
First, Quiboloy could remain in the Philippines while the case is being heard, with proceedings temporarily held in abeyance.
Alternatively, the local case could be suspended to allow for his extradition to the US.
On Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that the White House had requested Quiboloy’s extradition; the DFA immediately forwarded the request to the Department of Justice.
Quiboloy was arrested in September 2024 for violating Republic Act 7610, also known as the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.
He also faces non-bailable charges of human trafficking.
Following his arrest, Quiboloy pleaded not guilty to the charges but remains detained at the Pasig City Jail.—Alvin Pelobello, Eurotv News
