Kharkiv, Ukraine — A Russian drone attack hit a kindergarten in the northeastern city of Kharkiv on Wednesday.
Kharkiv’s mayor said 48 children and several teachers were inside the school when the strike happened.
Luckily, they had already taken shelter underground after air raid sirens went off.
However, a 40-year-old man who was walking near the building was killed when the kindergarten was directly hit.
Meanwhile, nine people were also injured.
The explosion also damaged nearby buildings and vehicles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the other hand, condemned the attack, and saying there is no justification for targeting a school full of children.
The strike in Kharkiv was part of a larger wave of Russian attacks overnight that targeted Ukraine’s energy and civilian infrastructure across several regions.
It can be recalled, Ukraine’s largest private energy company confirmed emergency power outages in three regions this month after Russian missiles caused serious damage to key power facilities.
One of these is a Russian drone attack that hit four power facilities in Odesa region, sparking widespread blackouts.
According to international reports, Russia appears to be trying to damage Ukraine’s power grid ahead of the winter, a tactic it has repeatedly used to lower morale and pressure Kyiv’s government.
