VELOSO’S FAMILY, LEGAL TEAM FILES MOTION TO RESOLVE EXPEDITING PETITION VS RECRUITER

Manila, Philippines – Both parents of Mary Jane Veloso, National Union of People’s Lawyers and Migrante International call the supreme court to expedite the petition filed by their camp over the alleged drug trafficking case.

Veloso’s family also maintained that she was innocent in the case, as they have requested a writ of habeas corpus in November 2025.

But until now, the court has not yet responded to the petition of Veloso’s camp.

Veloso’s parents, along with her legal counsel from the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL), filed a motion to resolve before the Supreme Court, Friday.

Along with the letter, Mary Jane herself wrote, which was addressed to Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo.

Mary Jane said in the letter that she requested the Court to expedite the petition filed by her camp, because her carpeta while being detained at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City, she was sentenced to reclusion Perpetua or life imprisonment.

The only thing Mary Jane’s camp is currently holding is their petition to prove her innocence in the case, along with her family’s request for the executive clemency.

Mary Jane was arrested in Indonesia for drug trafficking in 2010, and sentenced to the death penalty for ten years.

But in November 2024, the Indonesian government decided to send Veloso back to the Philippines, and a month later, she was sent back to Manila to serve the remaining years of her sentence in the case.

But since Veloso was returned to the country, she has not testified in the case she is involved in.

One of the things that makes it difficult, according to Mary Jane’s legal counsel, is her situation as a detainee at the Correctional Institution for Women.

Therefore, there is still no certainty when she will be able to present her testimony in court.
