PH, GERMANY DEEPEN TIES IN ECONOMY, SHARED INTEREST IN SECURITY

Manila Philippines – The Philippines and Germany pledged to defend the international rules-based order, including supporting the United Nations and international law amid evolving challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East and Europe, during the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Manila. 

In a bilateral meeting at Malacañang Palace, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. outlined the agreements he and Steinmeier reached. 

This included an exchange of views on regional and international issues. 

The two leaders also had the opportunity to discuss cooperation in other areas such as peace and development, defense, maritime cooperation, economic cooperation, climate action, energy and labor. 

Marcos also acknowledged that the 45,000 Filipinos based in Germany, most of whom are nurses, reflect the deep people-to-people ties between the two countries. 

Marcos recognized Germany’s important contribution in the field of trade and investment as an important trading partner in the European Union. 

Along with recognizing the cooperation between the two countries in defense, as Germany has been part of the Balikatan exercises since 2024.
