Manila, Philippines — During a press conference on Thursday, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla revealed that authorities successfully thwarted an alleged mass shooting plot at Tolosa National High School in Leyte.
According to Remulla, Senator Bam Aquino received a tip regarding the planned shooting and immediately coordinated with him to implement preventive measures.
The Interior Secretary then promptly ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to conduct an investigation.
The threat reportedly originated from a 14-year-old female Grade 10 student at the school, who posted the warning on social media in the Waray dialect.
Initial investigations reveal that family problems, along with the potential influence of the recent Tacloban City shooting, may have driven the student to make the post.
Meanwhile, as the investigation into the Tacloban City shooting continues, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has gathered new details. Reports indicate that some drug lords are allegedly using 14-year-old children as couriers due to their immunity under current juvenile laws.
The minor involved in the case was reportedly carrying a Glock pistol owned by his aunt, who is a police officer and is a 14 yr old.
Following this string of incidents involving minors, Remulla plans to recommend that Congress review the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is also studying a recommendation to Congress to review gun ownership laws in light of the Tacloban shootings. Under current laws, gun owners can only face civil cases if another person uses their firearm to commit a crime.
Authorities urged the public to immediately call 911 if they receive any security threats or witness incidents similar to what happened in these schools, ensuring swift action can be taken.
