QUEZON CITY, Philippines — The House of Representatives rejected the entry of appearance filed by Vice President Sara Duterte’s lawyers in view of the absence of a proper label.
House Secretary General Reginald Velasco confirmed that the document lacked a clear statement of its content, and without instruction from the plenary to receive impeachment materials, the House deferred acceptance.
House spokesperson Princess Abante clarified that the document was submitted without a cover letter or explanation, making it unclear where it came from and what the letter was for. She emphasized there was no rejection—only a need to follow proper procedures. “This is not about sinister motives. We simply need correct identification for official processing,” Abante said.
Despite this, Senate impeachment court spokesperson Reginald Tongol confirmed the lawyers’ entry of appearance had been filed, with 16 lawyers defending Duterte. Tongol noted that the House furnished a copy, but it included a note saying, “Tender Copy refuse to receive,” which could delay the said proceedings.
Abante stressed the entry of appearance is not a requirement to begin trial, saying, “The House has already fulfilled its duty by transmitting the Articles of Impeachment. Any delay now lies with the Senate.” She urged officials not to use a clerical issue to mislead the public, warning against turning the process into a political drama. — Ruzzel Andante, Contributor
