China’s Largest Coast Guard Ship Spotted Near Escoda Shoal, Days After Manila-Beijing Talks

MANILA, Philippines — Just days following discussions between Manila and Beijing, several Chinese vessels were observed near Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, including China Coast Guard’s largest ship, CCG 5901, which was sighted off Escoda (Sabina) Shoal.

On Thursday, Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) and maritime militia vessels were seen in a two-line “blockade” formation close to Ayungin.

A total of 23 Chinese vessels were reported off Panganiban (Mischief) Reef on Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, China’s massive 12,000-ton vessel, CCG 5901, was seen at Escoda Shoal within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, monitoring the BRP Teresa Magbanua.

As of Thursday morning, “the Monster” was positioned just 600 meters away from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship.
