Manila, Philippines — Several areas in Luzon are set to experience rotational brownouts again tonight after the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Luzon Grid under Yellow and Red Alert status due to insufficient power supply and limited operating reserves from power plants in the region.
According to the NGCP, a Yellow Alert was implemented today from 3:01 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will again take effect from 10:01 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Meanwhile, a Red Alert is in effect from 4:01 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., during which power interruptions are expected.
As a result, nearly one million customers of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) are affected by rotational brownouts across various parts of Luzon.
Meralco said it is closely monitoring the situation and continuously addressing the impact of the power supply shortage within its franchise areas.
Among the affected areas are Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Metro Manila, and Rizal.
Reports indicate that the rotational brownouts last around two to three hours in order to maintain and manage the available electricity supply for households and businesses.
The NGCP also reported that several power plants experienced technical problems, contributing to the thin power supply in the Luzon Grid. However, power supply in the Visayas Grid has reportedly returned to normal since last night.
Meanwhile, the NGCP also placed the Visayas Grid under Yellow Alert status.
According to the NGCP, the Yellow Alert in the Visayas is effective from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. due to low power reserves in the region.
The NGCP explained that a Yellow Alert is raised when the power supply is nearing insufficiency to meet consumer demand.
On the other hand, a Red Alert is declared when the total available power supply can no longer meet consumer demand, which may result in rotational brownouts in affected areas.
