PBBM EXPEDITES P20/KG RICE SALE AMID OIL CRISIS

Manila, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Agriculture (DA) to expedite the nationwide expansion of the “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” program.

Under the President’s directive, the sale of cheaper rice in Kadiwa outlets across different areas should adjust their operating hours to allow more consumers to purchase the subsidized rice.

President Marcos emphasized the importance of the program and its expansion, especially as the country continues to face a crisis amid the ongoing rise in fuel prices.

Based on DA data for the first quarter of 2026, there are now 932 P20 rice-selling sites nationwide, which include Kadiwa outlets.

These also include sites located at National Food Authority (NFA) warehouses, local government units, government agencies, and other sellers accredited by the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI).

The DA said that although only selected groups are currently qualified for the program, such as senior citizens, 4Ps beneficiaries, solo parents, persons with disabilities (PWDs), farmers, and fisherfolk, it still provides significant help and reduces daily expenses.

The NFA is currently preparing to reach its target of 1,800 P20 rice selling sites nationwide before the end of 2026.

Meanwhile, based on agreement between the NFA and FTI under the DA, they are also set to establish additional P20 rice sites in Cebu, Capiz, Bukidnon, Cotabato, Catanduanes, and other areas or communities with a high number of families and individuals in need of cheaper rice.
