ZAMBOANGA CITY, PHILIPPINES — In aim of transforming the youth as “peace champions,” the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) conducted a psychosocial and peacebuilding initiative involving orphans of former violent extremists (FVEs) in Sulu.
In partnership with Gagandilan Mindanao Women Incorporated (GMWI), 30 orphans of FVEs in Sulu participated in a five-day training workshop focused on building their healing, peace, and resiliency.
“We would like the youth to be the champion, the peace champion…ang kabataan ang pag-asa (the youth are the hope),” GMWI Founder Wahida Abdulla noted.
The youth were inspired to regain the title of Kagandilan (courageous fighter) and transform their identity as leaders of their generations, highlighting their active role as peacebuilders of the community.


While the concept of Kasanyangan (positive peace) goes beyond the absence of conflict. According to OPAPRU Director Bahjin, it translates to comfort, security, and prosperity.
“Ang kapayapaan ay hindi lamang nabubuo sa pamamagitan ng mga kasunduan. Ito ay nagsisimula sa. bawat isa sa tao, sa ating mga pamilya, sa ating mga komunidad,” Bahjin stated.
The program concluded with Lakbay-Aral with OPAPRU and GMWI ensuring that these “peace champions” youth return to their community equipped to foster social cohesion and trust in government. — Nicole Buena, Contributor
