The death toll from the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Colombia on Monday, August 10 has reached 281, according to the Unidad Nacional para la Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres (UNGRD), or the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management.
As of August 13, 2026, at least 3,971 people have been injured, while 379 others remain missing following the earthquake.
Meanwhile, 348 residents have been rescued, along with 169 animals.
Director General David Santiago Tamayo of Colombia’s Disaster Risk Management Unit, reported that more than 74,000 homes have been damaged, and 12,000 homes have been destroyed.
More than 170 buildings have also collapsed due to the impact of the earthquake.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national emergency following the calamity.
On the other hand, the government has already deployed rescue teams and equipment to search for remaining survivors and continue to assist affected communities.
However, Espriella said the government would need to invest in rebuilding homes, supporting victims, and providing relief to affected people.
The earthquake was also felt in neighboring countries, including Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.—Franzciene Gelacio, Contributor
