DILG CALLS FOR STRICT ENFORCEMENT OF SAFER CITIES INITIATIVE IN ALL LGUs

Manila, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urging all cities, municipalities, provinces, and barangays to strictly enforce existing policies and ordinances within their jurisdictions aligned with the Safer Cities Initiative.

Part of this effort is making sure that all streets across the country safer at all hours of the night, free from fear of crime.

According to the DILG, even before the pilot testing of the Safer Cities Initiative across Metro Manila, some local government units (LGUs) were already implementing similar measures.

These include banning the consumption of alcohol on streets or in public places, regulating videoke and other forms of noise beyond designated hours, and enforcing a 10:00 PM curfew.

The agency said LGUs only need to tighten the implementation of these measures, especially in transport terminals, commercial districts, and other crowded areas, in line with the DILGs program.

Based on the agency’s latest data, a total of 68,257 individuals have already violated Safer Cities regulations.

Most of them were apprehended for drinking, smoking, or being shirtless in public places, while others violated curfew hours and continued karaoke activities beyond the permitted time.
