MAKABAYAN BLOC SEEKS HOUSE INQUIRY ON DISINFORMATION OPS, RED-TAGGING COMPLAINTS VS. PGMN

Manila, Philippines — Amid the extortion case and another NBI probe against Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN), the Makabayan bloc in the COngress seeks a House inquiry against the social media handle.

This is connected to the alleged red-tagging and disinformation activities done by the network through their social media platform.

In House Resolution No. 1009, the Makabayan Bloc emphasized that PGMN and its online anchors have repeatedly engaged with red-tagging and online harassment through its social media contents and broadcasts.

They particularly pointed to PGMN Anchor CJ Hirro who they accused of using the online platform to spread baseless accusations against progressive leaders, partylist groups, activists, and civil society groups..

Makabayan noted that these accusations expose the groups to threats and harassment.

The Makabayan bloc cited that in an August 4 episode, Hirro allegedly red-tagged the members of the Makabayan Bloc, accusing them of having links with Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and New People’s Army (NPA).

In another episode in December, Hirro allegedly implied that the Gabriela Women’s Party is receiving foreign funds, raising malicious suspicions and harassment against its members.

Gabriela Partylist Representative Sarah Elago argued that progressive groups have long been targets of red-tagging, and that journalism should not be used for this interest.

“Red-tagging has become a cheap way to generate clicks, clout, and engagement at the expense of people’s safety and democratic rights. These reckless accusations are being weaponized online to harass and endanger activists, progressive organizations, and government critics,” Elago said.

With this, the Makabayan bloc seeks an inquiry on whether public funds were used to spread red-tagging and disinformation activities of PGMN.

Elago added that government resources should not be used to harass and attack critics and progressive groups.—Mia Layaguin, Eurotv News
