NCDA RAISES CONCERN OVER ‘ONE WISH WILLOW’ TREND ONLINE MOCKING PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Manila, Philippines — The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) raises concern over the ‘One Wish Willow’ online trend circulating on social media.

The said trend originated from a film and is being turned into content by influencers not only in the Philippines but also in other countries.

However, instead of entertaining viewers, it appears to have resulted in mocking persons with disabilities.

In some videos by content creators, the trend has been given a wrong interpretation, where the phrase referring to a single wish that will be granted “I want to be special” has turned into imitation of persons with disabilities.

The NCDA said that such content clearly shows a loss of respect, inhumane, and insulting not only to persons with disabilities but also to their families.

According to the NCDA, disability should not be made fun of or used as a joke.

The agency also said it has reported the said content to TikTok for possible action under community guidelines.

They also called on content creators to be responsible and careful in making videos, ensuring that no individual is harmed or offended emotionally, physically, or mentally.

The NCDA also urged the public to report similar videos that do not bring positive impact to viewers.

Aside from the NCDA, there were also negative reactions from some parents who have children, relatives, or acquaintances with special needs.

They expressed concern over such content inspired by the film, saying “Be careful what you wish for.”

The agency also reminded that under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, any form of creation or posting of videos or images that results in mocking or imitating persons with disabilities may be punishable.

In addition, the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities is also in effect.
